| Choosing the right carrier for you Choosing the right carrier for you The first thing you want to ask yourself when deciding what baby carrier to buy is are you willing to buy more then one baby carrier or are you looking for one baby carrier that is going to do everything for you. If you said that you only want one baby carrier to do it all then I would strongly suggest getting a two shoulder baby carrier. A two shoulder baby carrier such as a Wrap, Soft Structured Carrier (Ergo), or Mei Tai are going to give you the most support because they use more of your body to support the baby. They are going to be ideal for carrying your baby or toddler for long periods of time and as your child grows and becomes to heavy for long carries with a one shoulder baby carrier. If you are open to getting two or more baby carriers then I suggest getting both a Ring Sling or Pouch for a one shoulder baby carrier and an Ergo, Mei Tai or a Wrap Around Carrier for a two shoulder baby carrier. Ring Sings and Baby Pouches are great for short carries up to about an hour or so, or around the house. I like to keep one stashed in my car or diaper bags for trips when I am out. It is much easier to simply place your baby in your baby carrier then try to struggle with the big heavy car seat while you’re out and about. Wearing your baby is soothing for him and is an excellent way to meet your babies needs while still doing the things that you need to get done. Babies cry less when worn and get a bird’s eye view of their world, thus stimulating early learning and development. It can be hard to choose the right baby carrier when there are so many choices out there. Below is a short description of the different types of baby carriers and what makes them unique. Ring Slings and Baby Pouches are very similar in their carrying positions. They can both be used in a cradle position, tummy 2 tummy, outward facing or buddha carry, hip, and on your back as the baby has proper head control. What makes them different is adjustability. Pouches are usually non-adjustable so it is very important to get the correct size. You can also create the perfect adjustment with a Ring Sling while you are a bit limited with a Baby Pouch. Care givers can also share a Ring Sling if they are not the same size because they can be adjusted. Ring Slings are also great for easy nursing on the go as the tail of the Ring Sling can be used as a cover while nursing in public or as a blanket for your sleeping child Baby Pouch’s aka Pouches are well liked because of their very short learning curve and ease of use. They are also the most stream lined looking Baby Carrier which is a plus to some. Pouches fold down the smallest size so its easy to stash one in your diaper bag or car for traveling. You will want to have one baby carrier available for wearing while one is in the wash. Once you get used to Babywearing you will find it hard to go without it! You will wonder how you ever got along without it. Wrap Around Carriers, or more commonly known as wraps, are going to be your most versatile Baby Carriers. They can be used in a variety of carries. They can be worn on your front, side and back in various positions. When worn as a two shoulder carry, Wraps are great for long carries and as your child becomes heavier. Mei Tais are great to use on your front for the best range of motion with your hands. Most Mei Tais come with a fold down headrest which is great for head support when your baby falls asleep while being worn. They can be used with baby facing in, out, on the hip and as a back carry to make you truly hands free. Soft Structured Carriers such as an Ergo Baby Carrier are a great all round Baby Carrier and should be considered if only getting one Baby Carrier. They are the most similar to commercial front carriers so they really help for first time Babywearers because of their look. Dad’s usually really like Ergo Baby Carriers because they look sporty and feels just like a back pack when worn on your back. I love my Ergo for easy back carries and for long carries. Most Soft Structured Carriers or Pack Carriers will have an infant insert that you can purchase separately until the baby has head control. Pack Carriers have padded straps and buckles making it comfortable and easy to put on and off. They also come with a sleep hood for the babies head should they fall asleep while being worn. Any Baby Carrier that you buy you can make work. You just have to be willing to give it several tries before you give up. Just like learning anything new it can be frustrating at first. Make sure that your baby is changed, fed, and not crying before attempting to wear him or her while learning. After you get used to using your new Baby Carrier it will become like second nature and you will never want to go without it.
